Why I Chose a PWA for BiteBeat
Why BiteBeat launched as a Progressive Web App: lower friction, faster access, and a product experience that feels immediate on mobile.
First things first: what is a PWA?
PWA stands for Progressive Web App, which means it is a web application that does not require installation on your mobile device, but can still have the look and feel of a native mobile app.
When I started building BiteBeat, I kept coming back to one simple question: how can I make this as easy as possible for people to use in real life?
BiteBeat is the kind of product that should feel immediate. If someone wants to check in, log something quickly, or come back to it during the day, they should not have to go through unnecessary steps. That is a big part of why I chose to make BiteBeat a Progressive Web App instead of starting with a native mobile app.
I wanted people to be able to open BiteBeat instantly from a link, try it right away, and if it fits into their routine, add it to their home screen and use it like an app. That felt much more aligned with the kind of experience I wanted to create: lightweight, accessible, and easy to return to.
Choosing a PWA also lets me focus on building one strong experience instead of splitting time across multiple separate apps and release processes. At this stage, that matters a lot. It means I can spend more time improving the product itself and less time dealing with the overhead that comes with maintaining different native versions.
I also like that a PWA keeps the barrier to entry low. You do not need to search an app store, install something first, or make a big commitment just to try BiteBeat. You can simply open it and start. If you like it, you can keep it on your home screen and treat it like any other app.
For me, that tradeoff made sense. I wanted BiteBeat to be easy to access, easy to use, and easy to improve over time. A PWA gave me the best path for that.
If you would like to keep BiteBeat one tap away, you can also add it directly to your home screen.
How to Add BiteBeat to Your Home Screen
On iPhone, open BiteBeat in Safari, tap the Share button, choose Add to Home Screen, and tap Add.
On Android, open BiteBeat in Chrome, tap the menu in the top-right corner, choose Add to Home screen or Install app, and confirm.
Once you do that, BiteBeat will appear as an icon on your phone, so you can open it straight from your home screen whenever you need it.
